The world is changing, making this modern era more focused on Digital usage. It is a well-known fact that technology is replacing almost everything. Everything is now done and drafted on our computers and we don’t need a pen and paper to write down notes as well the physical books have been replaced by PDFs. The question that arises now is- Can technology replace teachers and is it capable to teach students and eliminate the need for human teachers?
Everyone has a different perception. But what I believe is that the answer to the above-stated argument is big big ‘NO’. It is much obvious that technology is assisting students in their learning and it is playing a crucial role in the field of education. But, as of now, it does not have the power to replace teachers because human interaction cannot be replaced by computers and human skills cannot be taught by technology.
A teacher leads, guides, facilitates, and mentors a student. They are role models who set an example to students and drive them towards a brighter future. No matter how advanced or smart a computer program is, it can never come close to the knowledge and life experience a teacher brings. Several types of research have been conducted and it has been proven time and again that teachers bring about a change that no technology can. A teacher does not simply impart knowledge or information.
Now, let’s talk about some points from the other side of the debate. Although technology is helping a lot in the learning environment, it has not completely taken over the role of a teacher. Technology is merely an augmentation to a teacher. It can help the process of learning, but can’t replace the role of a teacher.
Teachers do more than just a one-way task of instructing a student; They identify social cues that would be impossible for a machine to parse, especially non-verbal or invisible interactions that affect the learning experience. They help identify roadblocks for students that might be more personal or emotional in nature that a machine cannot pick up.
Technology definitely has the ability to enhance relationships between teachers and students. It improves the engagement of the students when it is integrated into lessons. According to the research findings, the use of technology changes the role of a teacher from a traditional knowledge provider into a facilitator guiding the students.
Think back to your favorite teacher- “did you enjoy her teaching because of her infallible library of knowledge or because of how he/she made the subject she taught, come alive for you”?
